Former Prime Minister Winston Churchill said the unexplained incident should be kept secret for 50 years, fearing it would provoke a “mass panic.”

The claim was discovered in files newly unclassified by the British Ministry of Defense. It came from a scientist who said his grandfather was one of Churchill’s bodyguards.

According to the documents, details of the coverup emerged when the man wrote to the government in 1999 seeking to find out more about the incident. He described how his grandfather, who served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the war, was present when Churchill and U.S. General Dwight Eisenhower discussed how to deal with the UFO encounter.

The man, who is not named in the files, said Churchill was reported to have exclaimed, “This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic amongst the general population — and destroy one’s belief in… read more

The crash of an ultralight parachute aircraft in Austin was caused by lost lift in a gust of wind, the Transportation Safety Board has determined.
As reported earlier this week, the tiny, one-seat ultralight crashed just short of some power lines shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A small float plane crashed into suburban Vancouver’s Pitt Lake on Monday, but the pilot walked away without a scratch.

Pilot Jean-Claude Carrara of North Vancouver was the only person on board when his ultralight float plane lost power on approach to the lake.

“Within 50 feet of the water, my engine just quit,” Carrara told CTV News. “I just had enough room to put it in a glide, and somehow — I could not raise the nose high enough — hit the mud flat, and bounced off.”

He said the plane’s float absorbed most of the impact of the crash. Although the aircraft flipped over, he was able to find his way to safety through a broken door, and waited in knee-deep water until a passing boater ferried him to shore.

“I walked out of it without a scratch. Good day for me but not for the plane, I guess,” Carrara said.

He said he’s been flying… Read More

Matthieu de Quillacq told us Monday at Oshkosh that he is “a lucky man” and not because he survived his trip to Oshkosh from the south of France in his Italian-made Kompress CH-7 very light helicopter. Long before the weeklong trip that brought Quillacq to AirVenture Oshkosh 2010, Quillacq won a timed point-to-point navigation contest (no GPS allowed) when he flew the CH-7 against big-name turbine-driven competitors. Before working for Kompress, Quillacq competed in hang gliders and also flew paragliders, honing his airmanship and eyesight navigation. For Kompress customers, he’s delivered (flown) a helicopter to Africa and he’s flown another over China’s Great Wall. On his trip to Oshkosh, Quillacq spent some long lonely hours over cold open water. He described the early, long overwater leg between Faroe Island and Iceland: “It’s funny because your head starts to think differently … you feel you are nothing and you try to find God everywhere.”

Quillacq’s nearly 5,000-mile trip from Barcelonnette, France, to Oshkosh, Wis., took him about eight days, aided by longer daylight hours in the far north. His route took him through the UK, Iceland, Greenland, Baffin Island and through Canada across the cold Labrador Sea.

Oshkosh, WI – The Experimental Aircraft Association is offering a $60,000 prize to the individual or corporation that can demonstrate the most promising level of achievement in E-Flight at AirVenture 2011. The prize has been made possible by equal contributions from AeroLEDs, Aircraft Spruce & Specialty, Dynon Avionics, and Wicks Aircraft Supply.

“The four companies that created the prize are all actively involved in the sport aviation movement,” said EAA President Tom Poberezny. “They, like EAA, recognize that much of the innovation in the aviation world has come out of homebuilders’ workshops and the creative environment that is part of AirVenture Oshkosh. EAA is pleased to join with these forward looking companies in creating a challenge that will lead to the development of an electric aircraft that we might all enjoy.”

The E-Flight Prize is one of a number of steps EAA will be taking over the next decade to support and stimulate research and development in the field of electric powered flight. “The organization is committed to encouraging new ideas that lead to innovative products,” according to Poberezny. Criteria for awarding the prize will be announced in the fall when an assessment of the status of electric flight is completed.

Poberezny added that he hoped other leaders in the EAA community would contribute to the prize over the next 12 months to enhance the challenge.

For entry forms and competition criteria, please write EAA E-Flight Prize, P.O. Box 3086, Oshkosh, WI 54903-3806 or visit www.EAA.org.

The Experimental Aircraft Association announced today that pilot and EAA member Rod Hightower will succeed Tom Poberezny as the organization’s president.

Hightower was introduced by Poberezny, during his opening day remarks. Poberezny will remain as EAA chairman and chairman of the annual AirVenture convention.

Hightower, a Missouri native, has a distinguished career in business leadership. His career spans more than 25 years of business management for manufacturing and industrial companies. He has led both U.S. and international operations with as many as 2,300 employees and annual revenues of as much as $470 million, according to an EAA press release.

The organization said Hightower is also a vintage aircraft enthusiast, having restored his own Stearman biplane, which he flies out of Creve Coeur, Missouri. He is a director of the National Stearman Foundation and has helped organize the annual Stearman National Fly-in. His duties as EAA president will begin September 7 and include the day-to-day operations as well as direction of EAA programs and strategy. He is only the third president in EAA history and the first outside the Poberezny family.

As chairman, Poberezny will use his experience and background to foster EAA’s business relationships, philanthropy and the organization’s endowment, according to the EAA press release.

“This is a very exciting time for EAA and general aviation,” said Hightower, who is attending this week’s EAA AirVenture with his wife, Maura, and their five children. “I’m honored to be selected as the next leader of such a passionate group of aviation enthusiasts as EAA members. I’ve been a part of the organization for more than 20 years. There is much work ahead, but I am eager to start.”
